What's included in a Portland EV charger install

The charger is the simple part. What sets the price is whether the service has room for one more large circuit, and how far the parking spot is from the panel. We check both before anything is quoted, so a panel upgrade is never a surprise after the fact, and only appears on the quote when load management can't do the job.

Home Level 2 chargers

A 240-volt dedicated circuit and a charger in the garage, under the carport, or on an outside wall by the driveway. We supply the charger or install the one you already have, hardwired or on a NEMA 14-50 outlet.

Tesla Wall Connectors & other brands

Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Emporia, and any other listed Level 2 unit, set to the right amperage for its breaker and connected to its app.

Outdoor chargers & detached garages

Outdoor-rated chargers with weatherproof fittings and a disconnect where code calls for one. A detached garage needs a feeder and usually a trench, so we price it as the separate job it is.

Load calculations & load management

We run the load calculation in-house before recommending a charger. When it comes up short, an energy management device or a SPAN smart panel can let the charger share the existing service instead of replacing it.

Panel & service upgrades

When the service really is full, we upgrade the panel or the service as part of the same project and coordinate the disconnect with PGE or Pacific Power.

Multifamily, workplace & fleet charging

Networked ChargePoint stations and shared Level 2 charging for apartment and condo buildings, offices, and fleet yards, with load management so several ports share one service. See our commercial work in Portland.

Why choose Multiphase Electric

  • Usually no upgrade. We check the capacity you already have first. Smart load management frequently supports reliable charging on the existing service, which is the cheaper way to get there.
  • Full every morning. A dedicated 240V circuit adds 20–30 miles of range an hour, so a normal night on the charger covers a normal day of driving with room left over.
  • Room for the next one. Parking structures, multi-family, and fleet yards are planned as infrastructure, so the second and tenth charger don't mean starting the electrical over.

Licenses and certifications

  • Oregon CCB — Electrical contractor
  • ChargePoint — AC / DC certified
  • SPAN — Smart panel installer

How a project runs

Every Portland charger install follows the same steps. Most homes are done in a single visit; the ones that need panel work add the utility's schedule to the calendar.

  1. Capacity assessment

We look at the panel, the meter, and where the car parks, and run a load calculation to see what the service can take. Photos sent with the estimate request help us come prepared.

  2. Charger and circuit sizing

We recommend the charger's amperage and the breaker from the calculation, not from the charger's box. A 32- or 40-amp charger covers most daily driving, and often avoids the service upgrade a 48-amp unit would trigger.

  3. Fixed written quote

You get a fixed price that names the charger, the breaker size, the run length and route, and the permit, and says what happens if the panel needs work once the cover is off.

  4. Permit and install

We pull the electrical permit and book the install, usually within one to two weeks of the quote. A straightforward garage install takes two to four hours.

  5. Inspection and handoff

We test the charger under load, set it up in its app, schedule the inspection, and leave you with the permit paperwork, which utility incentive programs usually ask for.

What an EV charger installation costs in Portland

Every install is quoted at a fixed price after we look at the panel, so these are typical ranges for the Portland metro, not a quote. The home rows cover the electrical work; the charger is priced on its own, whether we supply it or you do. What moves the number most is whether the service has room for the circuit and how far the charger is from the panel.

ScopeTypical rangeTimelineIncludes
Long or concealed run $2,000 – $3,500 1 day on site Circuit through an attic, a crawl space, or finished walls, larger conductors where the length calls for them, permit, and inspection.
Charger in a detached garage $3,000 – $6,000 1–2 days on site Trenched feeder, subpanel and grounding at the garage, the charger circuit, permit, and inspection.
Charger with load management $1,800 – $3,500 1 day on site Load calculation, an energy management device or the charger's own load sharing, the circuit, permit, and inspection.
Charger with a 200A service upgrade $4,500 – $10,000 1–2 days on site, plus utility scheduling Load calculation, new 200-amp panel and meter base, the charger circuit, utility coordination, permit, and inspection.
Commercial Level 2 charging $7,000 – $15,000 per port 1–3 days once equipment arrives Dedicated circuits, charger mounting, load management where needed, and the permit.

Portland EV charger installation FAQs

Do you install EV chargers in Portland?

Yes. We install Level 2 chargers, including Tesla Wall Connectors and ChargePoint units, for homes, multifamily buildings, and businesses across Portland and the rest of the metro, from the load calculation through the final inspection.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Portland?

Most home installs with room in the panel and a short run cost $1,000 to $2,000 for the electrical work, plus the charger. Long runs, detached garages, and service upgrades cost more. You get a fixed price after we look at the panel.

Do I need a permit to install an EV charger in Portland?

Yes. A charger is a new dedicated circuit, and that is permitted work in Portland, as it is everywhere in Oregon. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and give you the paperwork when it passes.

Are there rebates for installing an EV charger in Portland?

Sometimes. Utility programs for chargers, including PGE's, change from year to year, and some only cover specific networked models, so check the current terms before you buy the charger. Most programs ask for a licensed installer and a permit number, and you get both from us.

Can I install a charger if my house has a 100-amp panel?

Often, yes. A 32- or 40-amp charger on a 40- or 50-amp circuit fits many 100-amp services, and load management can cover the rest. The load calculation shows which options work before you buy a charger.

How big a charger do I need?

Usually smaller than the box suggests. A 40-amp charger adds about 31 miles of range an hour, more than a normal night needs, and it needs a 50-amp circuit rather than the 60-amp one a 48-amp unit asks for. We recommend the size after the load calculation.

Should the charger be hardwired or on a NEMA 14-50 outlet?

We usually recommend hardwiring. Code requires GFCI protection on a 14-50 outlet, some chargers nuisance-trip on it, and a plug-in charger is limited to 40 amps. An outlet makes sense if you plan to take the charger with you when you move.

Can you install a charger outside, by the driveway?

Yes. We mount an outdoor-rated charger on an exterior wall or a post, with weatherproof fittings and a disconnect where code calls for one. A detached garage needs a feeder and usually a trench, which we price as its own scope.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

A straightforward garage install takes two to four hours, and most are booked within one to two weeks of the quote. Long runs and detached garages take longer, and a service upgrade adds the utility's schedule.

Do you install chargers for apartment buildings and businesses in Portland?

Yes. As a ChargePoint certified installer we put in shared and networked charging for multifamily buildings, workplaces, and fleets, with load management so several chargers share one service, and the load calculations and documentation larger projects need.
